Getting Your Kitchen Ready to Sell
There’s no question that the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any home -- it will be subject to lots of scrutiny from buyers. If any aspect of this space is outdated, it is well-worth investing in upgrades prior to listing your home.
Here are some foolproof suggestions to make your kitchen shine!
Clear off the countertops - The first thing to do in any kitchen before putting your home on the market is to clear off the countertops. All small appliances, such as a toaster, toaster oven or blender, should be packed or put away in a cabinet. Only a few select pieces of décor should be on the counters - like your coffee maker, paper towel holder, and a utensil holder. A vase of fresh flowers set up on an island is a great look. Or a large bowl with a variety of colorful fruits is another possibility. Buyers love lots of countertop space in the kitchen, so keep them cleared off and it will make the kitchen feel larger as a whole.
Paint the cabinets & replace the hardware - If your cabinets are in good shape but a little worn down or outdated, a fresh coat of paint can make a significant difference. There’s no need to spend a lot of money on renovating the kitchen if the cabinets just need a little TLC. Paint them a neutral color such as white, beige or gray to match your countertops. Switching out the old hardware with some pretty new knobs and pulls is a very cost effective way to give your kitchen a facelift that will draw buyers in.
Countertops - If your countertops are outdated or in bad condition, then it would be smart to invest in replacements. If you shop around, you will likely find great deals on granite or other types of stone slabs. In addition, look for an economical option for a backsplash. There are lots of great looking peel-and-stick tile sheets that are easy to install by yourself. These changes will really make your kitchen pop!
Update the lighting - Look critically at the lighting in your kitchen. It would be well worth your money and time to replace any fluorescent lights (buyers view these as being outdated) you may have with recessed lights. Replace any ceiling fixtures or chandeliers with fixtures that are more up-to-date. Stick with daylight-style LED bulbs that will make the space feel cleaner and more open.
Update Appliances - If your appliances are older and worn out, it’s a great investment to replace them before listing your home. Stainless steel is the go-to material for a home that is going on the market.
Remove Rugs - Lots of homes have small rugs in the kitchen. Remove them - you want to show off your flooring!
